Online poker has long been something that people have wanted in New Jersey. Some people think it will be a great thing, others are not quite so sure. The matter is one that will soon be settled one way or another. In November of 2010 the states senate passed the bill that would make it possible not only for there to be online poker in the state, but would also allow the state government to regulate it. In early January the bill also made it past the state’s legislative branch. Right now that means that they only thing standing between the bill being a pile of paper and an actual fact is the Governor, Chris Christie. If the governor signs the bill it will go into effect, if not it will be vetoed and return to be tweaked and fine tuned into something he might approve later.

No one really knows what is going to happen to the bill right now. The governor has not really had much to say about one way or another. Supporters of the bill are actually encouraged by his silence. They feel that if he were really opposed he would have said something. Other people feel that Christie might not care for the bill, but see it as a way to generate some revenue which they desperately need.

The purpose of the bill is very simple. If the bill passes the citizens who live in New Jersey would be able to gamble online without having to worry about possible legal repercussions. While the bill would allow the residents to play poker and other games traditionally found on online casinos, they would not be able to bet on sporting events.

If the bill passes, residents in New Jersey should not expect that they would be given free rein to gamble whenever they want. They would still be heavily restricted. The biggest restriction that they state would be able to impose would be only allowing the residents to play on certain online casinos and not others. Another catch would be that residents of the state would only be playing against one another, which makes one wonder how much extra revenue the government would actually be able to get out of the deal, It seems like it would be far better if outsiders could also gamble, which would bring money into the state, instead of merely circulating funds.

If the governor does decide to pass the bill, New Jersey would be the first state to officially be taking a stance with regards to online casinos. While they would be the first to formalize the situation, they are not the only one considering. The state of California is also looking at the online casino situation and trying to figure out a way that they can make it work for them. One of the representatives of Nevada is taking things a step further. He would like to see the federal government step in and pass a bill that would regulate the online casinos all over the country.
